Sustainability starts with production
Sustainability is part of every decision we make. From the materials we select to the suppliers we collaborate with, we work to reduce our environmental footprint at every stage of the production process. Whenever possible, we use recycled materials—because choosing more sustainable resources is one of the most important ways we can reduce our impact on the planet.
We are committed to continuous improvement and constantly seek better, more responsible ways of working. We comply with all relevant environmental laws and regulations—and we expect the same from our partners. Every one of our suppliers signs clear agreements and codes of conduct that reflect our environmental standards and core values.
Minimizing footprint
Efficient logistics are a key part of our sustainability efforts. At Burde, we work actively to optimize freight and reduce unnecessary emissions by minimizing empty space in containers and consolidating shipments whenever possible.
For our e-commerce deliveries, we streamline packaging to reduce air volume—carefully balancing size and protection to ensure products arrive safely while using less material and space.
Sustainability also shapes our production choices. When selecting manufacturing partners, we consider not only product quality and ethics, but also the environmental impact of how goods are transported from factory to final destination.
Recycling
We believe that the best form of recycling is prevention. That’s why we work proactively to minimize overproduction—long before recycling becomes necessary.
Since we sell calendars, we face a natural challenge: time-sensitive products that can’t always be sold before the season ends. To tackle this, we invest in accurate forecasting. One of our key initiatives is an AI-powered project designed to improve our sales predictions and reduce surplus.
Still, unsold products do occur. When they do, our first step is to find meaningful ways for them to be used—often through charitable partnerships. Only when no further use is possible do we turn to recycling, working with trusted partners who ensure that the materials are handled in the most environmentally responsible way.
Climate report
For the fiscal year 2024, we conducted our second climate report. Based on the calculated data, we can steer our sustainability efforts toward even more appropriate actions to reduce our climate impact.
Our total climate footprint decreased by 15% compared to 2022. The average emission per manufactured product is 0.21 kg CO₂ — to be compared with approximately 5 kg CO₂ for producing a t-shirt.
Certifications
Forests for all forever
FSC® stands for Forest Stewardship Council®, an independent international organization that promotes environmentally responsible and sustainable forest management.
Sustainable forestry means that the forests used are cultivated and harvested in accordance with FSC’s principles, supporting both environmental protection and the well-being of local communities.
When you see the FSC label on our calendars, it indicates that the product originates from responsibly managed forests that meet rigorous environmental and social standards.
Amfori BSCI
Since 2012, we’ve been members of Amfori BSCI (Business Social Compliance Initiative), which helps ensure fair working conditions through independent factory audits.
Our main suppliers are BSCI-certified and meet both Amfori’s and our own standards for responsible production and safe, respectful workplaces.
We regularly visit our suppliers around the world and believe in growing together through long-term, transparent collaboration.
Swedish Environmental Base
We are environmentally certified through Swedish Environmental Base (Svensk Miljöbas), an independent organization that guides us in our efforts toward sustainable development and reduced environmental impact.
For us, it's essential to have full control over all components used in our products—such as plastic, metal, and more. These are regulated in accordance with EU directives and regulations.
Sustainability Policy
Burde Publishing AB shall develop and manufacture calendars, office supplies and greeting cards. These products are to be sold profitably to businesses, bookstores and stationery retailers, office supply stores, and grocery retailers.
The selection of suppliers, materials, and manufacturing processes shall be made with the least possible environmental impact. We are committed to continuously improving our environmental efforts. Environmental laws, regulations, directives, and other applicable requirements shall be fulfilled. We have supplier agreements and codes of conduct in place with all our suppliers, clearly outlining our environmental requirements. The environmental policy shall be applied as follows:
- All employees shall be trained to maintain a high level of environmental awareness and to consider environmental impact in their daily work. Our environmental efforts are planned and managed with the help of environmental certification according to Svensk Miljöbas, a national environmental management standard. We are also members of Swerea’s Chemicals Group, which we consult when needed.
- When selecting materials and processes, applicable legislation and industry standards shall be met—or preferably exceeded. At least 90% of our calendars shall be FSC-certified. We have been FSC-certified since 2010.
- Our actions shall reflect a circular mindset, with the highest possible use of recycled materials, as well as source separation and recycling of residual products.
- Our products shall be designed in a way that supports both our own and our customers’ environmental profiles in the market.
- Annual goals and guidelines for implementation shall be developed and followed up.
- Our sustainability team continuously works on the company’s sustainability issues, including environmental matters.
This environmental policy shall be implemented and followed by all our staff and communicated to our customers, suppliers, and other business partners, so that we can jointly advance our environmental adaptation.
Global business with a local heart
We believe in contributing to the society we’re part of. For many years, we’ve worked alongside partners who share our commitment to positive social development. One of our longest-running collaborations is with Samhall, a partnership that has lasted for over 30 years. We know that building a sustainable future requires working together.
We’re also deeply engaged in our local community—supporting local sports clubs, initiatives that promote integration for young people, and organizations focused on youth mental health.
